On Shutting Early
There is a hardware shop near here that closes at four, and has for thirty years. People complain about it the way they complain about weather — steadily, without any real expectation of change. It stays open because the owner likes the work, not because the hours suit anyone else.
Convenience is not the only value
A business built entirely around being available is a business that never gets to stop. The four o'clock shop trades some custom for a predictable evening, and the people who need it learn to arrive before then.
Regulars keep their own calendar
The odd hours filter for a certain kind of customer. They know the stock, they know where things are, and the transaction takes a third of the time it would elsewhere. Familiarity does the work that signage would otherwise do.
The sign stays honest
What makes it work is that the hours on the door are true. A shop that posts six and closes at four teaches people not to trust it; one that posts four and means it is simply dependable.
A shop that closes early is telling you something about its priorities.
